Cooking Workshops

By Kara Morris, written on Sep. 30, 2008

There is no culinary school at U of M and there are very few student groups whose focus is food (I can only actually think of one) so when I hear about food opportunities, I write them on my calendar and make every attempt to go.

The latest food opportunity I’ve found are the cooking workshops put on through the Michigan Arts & Programs. You’ll have to shell out $10 if you’re a student, but unlike the free volunteer opportunities around campus, you’ll be taking lessons directly from a chef. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss popular food topics and learn good cooking technique.

A few of the upcoming lessons are; “Everyday Meals Made Easy,” “Breakfast Cooking Made Easy,” and “Fabulous Desserts.” Check out the Arts & Programs website or email angelace@umich.edu for more information.

How to Teach Yourself to Cook Part III

By Kara Morris, written on Sep. 19, 2008

Part III: Get Off the Couch

The Food Network is another good way to learn about American or international dishes, but it will not teach you the valuable lessons you can learn in the kitchen. Think about it: of all the times you’ve watched a Food Network host prepare a recipe, how many times have you actually made the dish?

Food network shows can be useful–you can usually pick up some good knife tricks or get inspiration for a good recipe–but any real learning you’ll do will be in the kitchen. So, for every half hour spent watching the Food Network, try to spend at least an hour in the kitchen.

Don’t feel bad if you can’t blend flavors and come up with original dishes like so-and-so’s “shrimp and banana sauté.” It’s ok—you’re learning. Sometimes it’s better to just stick with the recipe, as I found out when I was experimenting and added “a little red pepper, and a little more, and a little more…” to my pork. Ultimately, the dish turned out inedible but, as a penny-pinching college student, I ate it.

Two Ways to Learn How to Cook and Volunteer at the Same Time

By Kara Morris, written on Sep. 8, 2008

Like learning how to cook–for free? Here are two student groups that you can get involved in this semester. Invite a date; I know a lot of girls who love to cook.

One warning: cook dates generally fill up fast, so sign up (with your date) when the opportunity arises.

Project Flavor
This group puts together great meals at Ann Arbor’s Ronald McDonald House located next to Markley. Cook dates occur about two Fridays of every month from 3-7 pm. Everyone cooks together, chats, serves the food, then eats together. Open to top chefs and disastrous cooks alike.

Project Flavor’s mass meeting is at 9:30 on Wednesday, September 17 in the Wolverine Room of the Union.
If you miss the mass meeting, you can contact projectflavor@umich.edu.

Habitat for Humanity Community Kitchen
I haven’t yet attended one of these cook dates, but I’ve been told that they fill up quickly. Cook dates occur about two Sundays of every month from 11:45 am to 4:30 pm. The mass meeting was tonight, but you can still sign up online or attend one of the chapter meetings.

Visit: http://www.umhabitat.org/view/eventList , create a login and sign up for events when they open up (I believe this is around 12:01 am on Mondays).
